Rhinoplasty, also called a nose job, is a cosmetic surgical procedure for rectifying, reconstructing, restoring functions and for aesthetically enhancing the nose. This implies treating nasal trauma, respiratory complications, congenital defects or a failed Rhinoplasty in the past. The procedure may involve reducing or increasing the size of the nose, altering the shape of nasal tip or bridge, adjusting the size of opening of the nostrils, altering the angle between the nose and the lip, correcting a congenital defect or relieving breathing problems. The procedure is performed only on patients whose nasal bone has completely grown to its full size.
A Rhinoplastic correction begins by putting the patient on sedation either under general or local anaesthesia and may be performed in a surgeons office, a hospital or an outpatient surgery centre. The procedure may roughly take 2 hours. Initially a local anaesthetic mixture of lidocaine and epinephrine is injected so as to numb the nose and its surrounding area. Temporarily, vascularity is reduced to limit bleeding. Nasal skin and soft tissues are separated from the osseo-cartilaginous nasal framework by the surgeon. Correcting and reshaping is done in the nose as required. Once this is over, suturing of incisions is done. External or internal splints may be placed and taped to prevent mobility of the newly reconstructed nose. This enables speedy healing of surgical cuts. Sometimes, during surgery autologous cartilage graft or bone graft or both may be used, so as to offer strength to the nasal canal or to make some changes in it. Autologous grafts may be harvested from nasal septum, rib cage or concha from the ear. For bone grafts, harvests are taken from the cranium, hips or the rib cage. When neither type is available, a synthetic graft is used to alter the nasal bridge.
The patient may leave the hospital on the same day. Swelling of the nose and face may come down gradually and headache after the surgery is common. The nasal packing can be removed after 3 days. Complete recovery takes several weeks. The tip may look swollen and feel numb for several months. Effectiveness of the surgery may be witnessed almost after a year.
